Assurant Inc is a global risk management firm based in New York City. Assurant provides specialty insurance products in a variety of areas including property insurance, casualty insurance, extended protection for devices, and other insurance sectors. Assurant was initially known as Fortis Inc when it spun off from a Dutch and Belgian company known as Fortis Insurance N.V. in 2004. Until 2015 Assurant also provided health insurance products but left that market to focus on housing and lifestyle specialty insurance products. Currently, Assurant focuses on its three divisions, housing which handles mortgage and multi-family housing insurance products, lifestyle which offers mobile device protection and extended warranty products for electronics, vehicles, and credit offerings, and preneed which offers pre-funded funeral policies and annuities.
Renters insurance policies vary in price based on specific factors such as the type of home being insured, number of previous losses, whether the rental agreement requires the resident to carry insurance, and whether or not the resident has an animal that has a history of attacks. Apartment policies start at $13.42 per month or $161.00 annually for a $100,000 liability policy with $10,000 of personal property coverage and a $250.00 deductible. Single-family home renters insurance starts at $17.42 per month or $209.00 per year for a $100,000 liability policy with $20,000 of personal property coverage and a $250.00 deductible. Identity theft and fraud protection add-ons can be added for an additional monthly or annual charge along with the renter’s insurance.
There is no minimum commitment term on renters insurance but refunds may or may not be available if cancelled early. Members may cancel at any time by contacting Assurant.
