HipChat is a private online chat and instant messaging web service. The website first launched in December 2009. The founders are Chris Rivers, Garret Heaton, and Pete Curley. It wasn’t until early 2010 that the service became available to the public. The service was acquired by Atlassian in 2012. Atlassian is an Australian enterprise software company. It is a publicly-traded company that was founded in Sydney, Australia in 2002. The co-founders and CEOs of the company are Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar. The headquarters are located in Sunnyvale, CA. HipChat is available on Mac, Linux, Windows, as well as Android and iOS devices.
HipChat has chat rooms to allow you to chat with people from around the world. Chat rooms are divided into rooms that are for people that share the same interests. Location rooms may also be available. One-on-One messaging allows you to private message other people. You can search through your chat history, which is saved after each conversation. Within the private messages, you can also share images and files. SMS messaging is available for one-on-one conversations. With the premium version, you are able to make/accept video calls as well as share your screen with others. With the premium version, there is unlimited file storage. The basic version only has 5 GB of file storage. You are also able to use GIFs and emoticons.
HipChat uses a freemium model, which allows you to use the service for free. For the premium version, you are charged a monthly subscription fee. You are able to cancel at any time.
